Vintage Vera Neumannn Silk Scarf

verasignature.jpg Vera Neumann, an artist turned textile designer, was known professionally as “Vera” since starting her business in the 1940s. Her small company used a small silk-screening machine to print designs onto linen, which Vera then made into placemats. In the post- WWII period, army surplus silk which had been used for parachutes, became available at cheap prices. Vera soon was in the scarf business, making the items in her Manhattan apartment, a loft on 57th Street, where Vera and husband George handled the entire operation. The VERA logo was her own signature and grew in size over the years. During the middle years, the logo included a ladybug. The last years had the Vera ladybug removed, and the logo signature became smaller again. VERA (C) can be found on tags, or at the bottom corner, or even in the design of the fabric. Vera Neuman items include: scarves, kitchen linens, bath towels, sheets, clothing, and pottery. One of her favorite designs was the butterfly. You can find it in many of her wild and colorful graphics. If you can't find VERA (C), it probably isn't a Vera Neumann item. Neumann’s bright scarves were more carefree, and spoke to the colorful opportunities of life in the 1950s. Vera’s bright, floral scarves were favored by such celebrities as Marilyn Monroe. Vera died in 1993 at the age of 84.
